Jr. High Dance

Create the Rock Star Experience for Jr. High!

"Did you just wake up one morning and say, 'I think I will put together a dance?'".   --Parent of Twin 7th grade boys.

I have to admit I have the gift of Jr. High.  I am the creator and organizer of the Ocean Beach Catholic School Dances.  And yes the Jr. High Kids did dance.  The events took place once a month, we would charge the teens $5 for an entrance fee. This would cover the cost of entertainment, food, security, and janitor services.  The dances would  place once a month during the school year.   It began with two school and grew to high as 4 different Catholic Schools.  The teens would arrive after school to decorate and then go home to change.

Tips for Planning a Jr. Dance!

1.)  In order to ensure safety and to give it a club feel we replace all the House Lights with Black Lights.  This would flood the whole area and create a club vibe.  In addition, it would allow the security to see everything.

2.)  Because of the growth of the dance, we hired security to help with the monitoring of the dance floor.  Parents would help with food and check-in.  All teens had a permission slip on file and it ran smoothly.

3.)  Food!  We always had simple snacks.  Soda and Water were always popular.  The parent would arrange the snacks into little cups so they could take them with them.

4.)  It's Not about dating!   The best dances are the line dances such as the Cha-Cha Slide.  Teens want an opportunity to be with their friends and to have fun.  With the declining opportunity for teens to gather and have a fun time, there is a great need.

5.)  Schedule the dance 1/2 hour before sunset.  Teens are self concious therefore you always want to have your event take place right before sunset.  Having lighting is great for check-in but its important to not have it light out after the initial gathering.

Venue for Sweet 16!

An amazing venue for a Sweet 16!

I was very surprised when I was visiting Jaime Blinson from Mesa Arts Center when she told me about the opportunity to rent out the Museum.  I am always looking for new locations to hold an event and the rooftop on the Museum  would be a perfect site for a Sweet16 or a teen event.  The ideal party size would be 75-100 people.  It has over head lighting but if you add some uplighting then add  a customize light,  it would be one amazing Party!

The other awesome feature is that when you need a break from dancing, you can wonder through the Museum.  It is a has a lot of great exhibits, and is an amazing deal.

The scenery is great!  Trust me you need to contact Jaime and talk about booking the rooftop for your next teen event.

After you have contacted Jaime,  email me, Jeremy from 1st Dance Entertainment - the teen expert, for your rockstar Sweet 16 event!  .  We will create an event that all the teens will talk about!

Planning Your Sweet 16: Picking a Venue!

The Venue!

Its not the only decision you have to make but it is the first one.  The location will dictate what you can and can not do at your party.  Questions to consider:

1.  Location:  Is it a convenient  location?  Since not all your friends will be 16 and have a car yet, someone will need to drive them.

2.  What is the square footage? In other words is it large enough for the amount of people that want to attend?  Is there room for:

  • Dinner
  • Dancing
  • Entertainment
3.  Catering:  Do they allow outside Catering or do they require you to use their preferred vender?

4.  Electricity.  Does it have dependable power?  (Don't laugh some places do not.)

5. Dance Floor:  Does it have a dance floor and what is the size?

6.  Decoration:  Can you put up decorations?  What are the restrictions.  How early are you allowed to setup and what time must you leave by?

Phoenix Sweet16 DJ: Top 5 tips

Creating an Epic Sweet16

1. Make it Formal!

When a person dresses up, it communicates the importance.
Both teens and adults enjoy getting dressed up for speical occasions and making it a formal
event communicates the importance of the Sweet 16

2. Prepare your guests!

Guests do not always know what to do, so they need
someo instructions. An invitation is a great to achieve your goal. It can state the particulars
about the event and the expected dress for the event. Remember no one wants to feel out of
place so communicate with your guests your expectations are, including: the time of the event,
location, and at time you need the guests to be prepared to great the Guest of Honor. Here is
an example of information to include on a invitation:
Sarah's Sweet 16
Masquarade Party!
(Sarah will arrive at 5:50pm so everyone needs to be in position)
Dreess to impress (Guys Slacks/Collar shirt/Tie/ Girls formal Dress)
Remember to wear a decorated mask!

3. Use a theme:

Themes set the tone for the party and assist with the decorations.
It creates the vision for your party. In addition your venders, especially your DJ may be able
to help with the theme if you give him/her enough notice.

4. Include a couple of Sweet 16 Traditions.

Sweet 16 is a moment oftransition and it is important to include some of the traditions. Pick the ones that best fit your
personality and your family wishes. Discuss this with your teenager and parent, and come to
a group decission. The tradition of lighting 16 candles and naming people you are greatful
for is a great way to acknowledge the people who have helped you along the way.

5. Dance with your Father/Step-Father

Sweet 16 is celebration with your family and friends. You should not ignore your family (considering they are probably paying the bill) A nice touch is a dance with your father even if the relationship has been strained. For some daughters it is a chance to reconnect with their father

I CAN'T FIND RIGHT DRESS for my Sweet 16, HELP ME!!!

http://www.phoenixsweet16dj.com

SWEET 16 Planning:  Dresses

by Anissa Fuentes, DJ Assistant!

Ladies,
Having trouble finding the perfect dress?
Can’t decide between a full length, formal gown or a short sassy dress? What material? Or color?
Well here are some advice/tips to keep in mind when picking the perfect dress.

1.       The dress equals the mood of the party.

The length and style of the dress set the mood for the entire party. If one goes with a full length gown with a full skirt, the tone of the party will be more formal and sophisticated or a short, sassy skirt creates a relaxed, club type atmosphere. Depending what you for your party, narrows down the style of dress you want.

Fun Sweet 16 Dress!

2.       Be unique

Find a dress that makes you stand out, one that’ll turn heads when you walk into the room, one that makes you sparkle like the star you are. If at first you can’t find the dress you want, don’t give up and settle, keep searching until you find the right one.

3.       Keep your theme in mind.

Match the dress to theme; after all it is your party. If the theme is pretty in Pink, don’t wear a Blue or Black dress. After all, you chose the theme.

4.       Bring some help.

When going dress shopping, ask your friends and family to come along, let them help and keep an open mind. After all you never know what the perfect dress will be. Your friends and family want you to find the perfect dress as well, they can also tell you what makes you look amazing and what doesn’t. Don’t take the criticism the wrong way, just take their opinions and SHOP!!!!

The Difference: Creating an Epic Sweet 16

Sweet 16s are designed to be an Epic Celebration!   This requires planning which prepares the guests for this experience.  One of the great underutilized tools is a theme!

Theme

Themes are Awesome!   I love themes for two reasons. The first is it gives direction to your guests and the second is it given vision to the party!

A theme clearly communicates what type of event will take place and how to dress.  A masquerade theme will inform the guests that is a formal event and a Black-light Highlighter party will be a more casual event.  Keep in mind that both theme do state how one is to dress.  A masquerade event is a dress to impress, while the black-light highlighter party requires all guests to wear thick white t-shirts and jeans.   Both are great events but have a completely different feel

Good theme communicates:

  • Type of Event:  Formal or informal
  • Type of Clothing:  Tuxedo, Formal dress, or Jeans & T Shirt.
  • Extra prop such as a masquerade Ball  you need a mask or Mad Matter: you need a Hat.
  • Remember always  have extra props for the teen who had a little trouble with the theme.
Sweet 16: Party like a Rock Star!
Yes, it does take a little extra work but it will be well with it.

Decoration:

The theme gives guidance  to the decoration.  It helps to keep everyone on the same page and  allows  everyone understands that all items/decoration needs to fit into a shared vision.

DJ

A great DJ will enhance your theme.  When you give the DJ enough notice he will be able to help support the theme. It may include uplighitng, or suggesting where to find the special prop!
One event was based upon the Emmys therefore we purchased a Red Carpet Runner. It was a great way to support the theme.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.  We can guide you on picking a theme which is an essential step in creating  your daughters Epic Sweet 16 Event.
