Planning your Sweet16 - Music Section!

Phoenix Sweet16 DJ: Music Selection!

Planning your Sweet16!

Parents vs Teens:  Choosing Music!

I was talking to a mother of young teen girl and she telling me  how she was horrified to hear about the music the DJ played at a teen event. When planning a teen event the age of the teens can vary and it important to choose correctly.  Music is important but is a difficult topic.  The DJ needs to please both the teens and the adults of the teens.  Some parent just give up on the music and let the teens hear anything they want.  I believe their is a way for the DJ to play music the teens will dance too and not offend the parents.

The first tip is communication.  Sit down with the teen, the parent, and the DJ.  Discuss what is acceptable and talk about specific songs.  By naming songs, that will give your DJ a opportunity to investigate where you as a parent is coming from.

With music, here are some questions to ask:
1.) Can the issue be resolved with planning a "clean edit?"
Sometimes there are just swear words that you rather not hear and if you play a song with inappropiate word edited out, you are fine.

2.)  Can you fix the song with mixing skills?
Sometimes either the intro or the tag line (The end rap party) need to be skipped.  The whole song is not bad, just there are parts you do not want played. This can be fixed with a DJ who knows how to properly mix the music

3. Does the song need to be put in the "Do Not Play List?"
Some songs will conflict with your family values, therefore they should not be played.  Do not stress about it, for there are plenty of other songs to choose from.

Top 3 Myths you believe about a Sweet 16!

Myth #1:  You believe a Sweet 16 is just teen party!

A Sweet16 is more than just a party!  It  is an experience of family and friends  gathering around a teenage girl during time of transition.  Through the Traditional Formalities the girl is affirmed by her family and friends.  An authentic Sweet16 creates a moment that your daughter will remember for the rest of life.

Myth #2:  Parents should not be involved in the Sweet16, its just about the teens!

Family is essential for teens, While your relationship might be strained your daughter still needs you.  It is important that your daughter feels your love and support as she continues to journey through this time of transition.  Parents do have an important role in the celebration of the Sweet16!

Family is important!

Myth #3: A Sweet16 will create a self centered daughter!

An authentic Sweet16 supports the values passed down through her family.   A key element of an authentic Sweet 16 is gratitude.  After the daughter is affirmed by her family and friends, through the candle lighting ceremony she acknowledges the people who have supported her.  Her gratitude is her response to love and support she has received though her entire life.

Grand Entrance

Sweet 16: Grand Entrance!

The Grand Entrance is the first event that the Guest of Honor participates in.  It a great opportunity for family and friends to support the guest of honor.  This sets the tone for entire night.   It is essential that the event is timed correctly.

1.) Scheduling:  Decide what time you want the dancing to begin and add an hour to the event.  Plan on beginning dancing at 7pm, put on the invitations to arrive at 6pm.  The extra time will give the teens extra time to strangle in.  A lot of teens are not on time.  Plan Accordingly!

2.)  Match the Grand Entrance with the theme.  The Grand Entrance states what type of event you will have, therefore it should match the theme.  Have a formal event get a red carpet runner.  Contact me your theme and I'll respond with the Grand Entrance Match!

3.)  Transition into the next event.  When you just plan nothing, the energy dies!   Transitions can be the Father/ Daughter Dance, a Girls dance, or a trivial game about the Sweet16 daughter!

Jr. High Dance

Create the Rock Star Experience for Jr. High!

"Did you just wake up one morning and say, 'I think I will put together a dance?'".   --Parent of Twin 7th grade boys.

I have to admit I have the gift of Jr. High.  I am the creator and organizer of the Ocean Beach Catholic School Dances.  And yes the Jr. High Kids did dance.  The events took place once a month, we would charge the teens $5 for an entrance fee. This would cover the cost of entertainment, food, security, and janitor services.  The dances would  place once a month during the school year.   It began with two school and grew to high as 4 different Catholic Schools.  The teens would arrive after school to decorate and then go home to change.

Tips for Planning a Jr. Dance!

1.)  In order to ensure safety and to give it a club feel we replace all the House Lights with Black Lights.  This would flood the whole area and create a club vibe.  In addition, it would allow the security to see everything.

2.)  Because of the growth of the dance, we hired security to help with the monitoring of the dance floor.  Parents would help with food and check-in.  All teens had a permission slip on file and it ran smoothly.

3.)  Food!  We always had simple snacks.  Soda and Water were always popular.  The parent would arrange the snacks into little cups so they could take them with them.

4.)  It's Not about dating!   The best dances are the line dances such as the Cha-Cha Slide.  Teens want an opportunity to be with their friends and to have fun.  With the declining opportunity for teens to gather and have a fun time, there is a great need.

5.)  Schedule the dance 1/2 hour before sunset.  Teens are self concious therefore you always want to have your event take place right before sunset.  Having lighting is great for check-in but its important to not have it light out after the initial gathering.

Venue for Sweet 16!

An amazing venue for a Sweet 16!

I was very surprised when I was visiting Jaime Blinson from Mesa Arts Center when she told me about the opportunity to rent out the Museum.  I am always looking for new locations to hold an event and the rooftop on the Museum  would be a perfect site for a Sweet16 or a teen event.  The ideal party size would be 75-100 people.  It has over head lighting but if you add some uplighting then add  a customize light,  it would be one amazing Party!
